Can you tell us a bit about your business?
Tokaora Diagnostics Ltd is developing a RAT test for facial eczema – a liver disease of sheep, cattle and deer. Use of this diagnostic tool will allow better management of the disease and reduce the substantial impact on the NZ economy as well as improving animal welfare.
What’s the backstory for your business idea?
Facial eczema is a liver disease of sheep, cattle and deer that is estimated to cost the NZ economy $290m pa. There is currently no way to test cheaply and easily on farms and by the time visible symptoms are showing, it is too late to save the animal.
In his research, Frey discovered a new way to test for the disease – a RAT test that can be used by farmers, veterinarians and researchers. Tokaora Diagnostics was formed early 2022 to develop the product.
The two founders, Frey and Pam, bring a complimentary set of skills to the business. Frey’s impressive academic record and his passion to make a difference to Aotearoa New Zealand agriculture combines well with Pam’s business and project management experience. Together we plan to be a boutique company for solving the pressing problems facing the animal health sector in our country.
What programmes, learning or mentoring have been of assistance so far?
- We were winners of the Venture Taranaki PowerUp competition. As a finalist we were matched with a mentor – we were very fortunate to team up with Bridgit Hawkins.
- We then successfully applied for and completed the Sprout program, once again under Bridgit’s mentorship. These programs were hugely beneficial and built up our network within the industry. We also had access to a myriad of expertise.
