NEW ZEALAND'S ONLINE MAGAZINE FOR ENTREPRENEURS, STARTUPS AND SME BUSINESS BUILDERS

“Passion, Experiment and Freedom to apply strategy “Passion, Experiment and Freedom to apply strategy. It gives me wings without drinking Redbull.”

That was one Startup NZ applicant’s response when asked why entrepreneurship matters to her — and it captures something so many founders feel but rarely say out loud.

Entrepreneurship is not just about building a business.

It’s about creating freedom to think differently.
Freedom to test ideas.
Freedom to back yourself.
And freedom to build something that creates opportunities for others too.

This applicant already has the vision, the lived experience, and the community connections. What she needs now are the frameworks, mentorship, and support to transform a meaningful programme into a scalable, high-impact initiative.

That’s the real power of scholarships.

They don’t simply fund education — they bridge vision and action. They help passionate people move from “I have an idea” to “I know how to make this work.”

And when one founder rises, communities rise with them. 💛

🌿 Startup NZ scholarships are designed to amplify impact, strengthen leadership, and help purpose-driven entrepreneurs build with confidence.

Your Vision Deserves a Plan The gap between a grea Your Vision Deserves a Plan
The gap between a great business idea and taking the first step often comes down to two things. Direction and resources.

The Startup NZ Entrepreneurs Programme was built to bridge that gap. We want to make sure the right support gets to the people who need it most.

Scholarships are for those who:
Need it – this support makes the difference between joining or not.
Commit – you can fully participate and complete the programme.
Have drive – you’re motivated to take action and make your entrepreneurial vision real.

Entrepreneurship should be accessible to anyone with the grit to do it.

If you can afford the programme on your own, we ask that you leave these spaces for those who cannot. This is about making the programme inclusive and accessible so if this is the bridge you need, the door is wide open.

Some support helps you get through the moment. Som Some support helps you get through the moment. Some changes what becomes possible next.

Lately, I have seen businesses step forward to share what founders actually need right now.

Clarity around new regulations.
Guidance through tough team decisions.
Spaces to connect and exchange ideas.

This kind of visibility matters.
It builds trust.
It positions businesses as leaders in the conversations that count.

But there is another layer.

Through NZ Entrepreneur, that visibility also funds scholarships into the Startup NZ Entrepreneurs Programme. So while one founder gains clarity today,
another gets the chance to begin.

A ripple that moves in both directions.

A true double win ✨

The emotional roller coaster of building something The emotional roller coaster of building something that matters.

This week I spoke with one of our scholarship recipients. A couple of years ago she decided to build an app. It is now almost ready to launch. She has invested everything into it, financially and emotionally, because she believes it can change the event industry.

The idea was born from a personal challenge. That experience pulled her into entrepreneurship and fuels her every day.

And still, she spoke about the whirlwind. The overwhelm. The weight of carrying it mostly on her own.

The gratitude for being one of the recipients of the Stratup NZ scholarship and her sense of relief is confirmation we're on the right track. All thanks to our might StartupNZ Sponsors.

We're talking about a year’s access to the Startup NZ Entrepreneurs Programme. Inside, she will gain insights from the stories of 23 Kiwi startups, learn from 13 interviewed entrepreneurs, and step into a steady framework that will support her through the highs and lows. We got you, my friend!

Because the emotions are not a weakness. They are part of caring deeply.

How have you navigated the emotional side of building your vision?

Creativity becomes powerful when it’s paired with Creativity becomes powerful when it’s paired with possibility.

I recently connected with an incredible Startup NZ community leader who is doing exactly that, creating a space where making and entrepreneurship meet.

She is opening a community Maker Space where local creatives can access tools like laser cutters and sewing machines. This is not only to create, but to explore how their craft can also become a source of income through the Startup NZ scholarships.

Because creativity is abundant in our communities.
What’s often missing is the bridge to “how do I turn this into something sustainable?”

This is the kind of leadership that shifts communities. It gives people permission to try. To prototype. To discover whether their “side project” might become something more.
And this is also where sponsorship truly matters.

A heartfelt thank you to the sponsors who back the Startup NZ initiative, and through it amazing initiative like this!

This is how ecosystems strengthen. Not through talk, but through access.
