Can you tell us a bit about your business?

Kiwi Assist is an online platform specifically developed for New Zealand’s seniors, providing them with convenient access to an easy-to-use online directory that caters to all their internet needs. Our platform serves as a comprehensive one-stop shop for their internet usage, offering a range of features.

One key feature is our website guides, which take seniors through every step, from sign-up processes to navigating websites and even making online purchases when necessary. We understand that these tasks can be daunting, so our guides are designed to simplify the experience and ensure seniors feel confident while using the internet.

In addition to website guides, we also offer app installation guides. Through extensive research, we have identified the most commonly used applications among seniors in New Zealand. Our guides provide step-by-step instructions on how to install these applications on their devices, allowing them to explore new tools and enhance their digital experience.

It’s important to note that we update our online directory, website guides, and app installations on a weekly basis. This commitment to regular updates ensures that our users always have access to the latest information and resources. We continuously strive to deliver fresh and relevant content, keeping pace with the ever-evolving digital landscape.

What’s the backstory for your business idea?

What started as a high school project to help grandparents get to grips with their computers and smartphones has grown into a fully-fledged business looking to bring New Zealand’s seniors into the digital age.

Martins, who is 18 years of age, says he got the idea when noticing that seniors struggle with technology, even if it seems simple to the younger generations. “We were practically born with smartphones, so it does come naturally,” he quips. “But when our parents and grandparents grew up, there wasn’t an internet, and the idea of a personal mobile computer in your pocket was the stuff of science fiction.” He realised it was probably a similar situation for many older citizens.

What programmes, learning or mentoring have been of assistance so far?

I am deeply grateful for the invaluable mentorship provided by Bill Smale and Anthony Quirk, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in guiding me towards fulfilling my goals and sparking my passion.
Being an entrepreneur at a young age is awesome, I think it’s important for teenagers to discover their passions and wholeheartedly pursue them. As a teenager, you have plenty of spare time and it’s all about making the most of it. Remember, it’s the actions you take during this time that truly shape your life.
Embracing failure is where some of the most valuable lessons lie. It’s in those moments that you have the opportunity to turn setbacks into stepping stones and get valuable lessons from them. So, never shy away from failure and always strive to learn and grow from it.
