Can you tell us a bit about your business?

FitTeens is New Zealand’s leading fitness program for teenagers aged 12-18, designed to build confidence, strength, and resilience through movement. Founded by Deeyana Amosa and her daughters, Roman and Kaide, FitTeens began during the pandemic as a way to keep teens active and has since grown into a thriving community. We provide strength, cardio, and outdoor training through weekly sessions, teen-led classes, and seasonal programs.

We serve teens—especially Pasifika youth—by creating a safe, inclusive space where they can develop fitness, leadership, and social skills. Our programs range from community-based fitness to elite high-performance training, offering expert coaching, mentorship, and opportunities for skill development.

At FitTeens, we don’t just train bodies—we empower young people to believe in themselves, overcome barriers, and thrive. Our vision is to expand our impact, offering wellness services and a dedicated training space to continue shaping the future of youth fitness in Aotearoa.

What’s the backstory for your business idea?

FitTeens was born during the pandemic when I, a fitness professional, created home workouts for my daughters, Roman and Kaide, to keep them active. What started as a small family routine quickly grew as friends and community members joined in. Seeing a gap in youth fitness—especially for Pasifika teens—I turned these sessions into a structured program.

Officially launched in November 2023, FitTeens began with fewer than 10 members and has since grown into a movement with over 300 members. It provides a safe, inclusive space where teens can build confidence, fitness, and leadership skills. Today, FitTeens continues to expand, empowering young people through movement while fostering community and self-belief.

What programmes, learning or mentoring, or resources have been of assistance so far?

FitTeens has grown with the support of key mentors, partnerships, and hands-on learning. We’ve benefited from guidance within the fitness and business communities, as well as media exposure on One News, Tagata Pasifika, Stuff NZ, and Radio NZ, which helped us refine our messaging and expand our reach.

Collaborations with F45 Glen Eden, Nox Performance, and Moana Pasifika Rugby have provided expertise in training and athletic development. We’ve also engaged with Sport New Zealand for insights on youth physical activity and well-being.

For other founders, we recommend:

  • “The Lean Startup” by Eric Ries – for building a sustainable business.
  • “Atomic Habits” by James Clear – for mindset and consistency.
  • Networking and local business hubs – connecting with experienced professionals accelerates growth.

Most importantly, real-world experience, community feedback, and adaptability have been our greatest teachers.
