Can you tell us a bit about your business?

Hā Habit specialises in holistic solutions that help people shift from states of stress and anxiety to calm, clarity, and focus. We have created a collection of Māori inspired breathing tools that assist in developing a prolonged breathing habit that supports calmness and nervous system regulation. The Hā tools come in adult and junior sizes, and help the user move from a sympathetic/stressed state to a parasympathetic/peaceful state when feeling overwhelmed.

We also offer educational workshops for businesses and organisations to help their staff better navigate the daily stresses of life. Our workshops focus on the nervous system (tinana), emotional (hinengaro) regulation, taha wairua (spiritual intelligence), and hā (breath) as a gateway to transformation. Our unique approach draws inspiration from the rich heritage of Māori culture, creating a seamless blend of ancient wisdom and modern science.

What’s the backstory for your business idea?

I struggled with low self-esteem, anxiety, social anxiety, & substance abuse as a youth and young adult. When I had my son, I committed to change and delving into personal development. While I had massive changes, a pivotal moment in my life was when my son started having suicidal ideations and self-harming at 8 years old. I was desperate to find solutions to better navigate stress and anxiety for both myself and him – this is when I came across breathwork and learnt about nervous system regulation.

To make a long story short, using the breath as a tool for calming, focus and emotional release became key in my daily practice. I started running hauora courses in schools and teaching the power of hā. I then stumbled across an overseas company selling breathing tools. Straightaway I knew that I wanted to create a Māori inspired version. That’s where the vision began.
