Can you tell us a bit about your business?

Mariners Log is a maritime software solution that leverages predictive maintenance and AI to improve the efficiency of vessel operations while promoting environmental sustainability. We provide an advanced platform for shipowners, operators, and engineers to enhance their maintenance systems by predicting equipment failures before they occur. Our digital logbooks streamline data entry, ensuring compliance and accuracy.

By reducing downtime, minimising fuel consumption, and optimising maintenance schedules, we help the maritime industry meet environmental goals, positively impacting their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and Emissions Trading Scheme (EST) compliance. Our tools empower maritime professionals to work more efficiently while contributing to a greener future at sea.

What’s the backstory for your business idea?

I’ve been a marine engineer in the commercial and super-yacht sectors since 2013, and I was frustrated by the outdated systems used on ships. These inefficiencies cost time, money, and affect operations. Ships generate thousands of data points, yet most go unused, with fleets relying on reactive and planned maintenance.

During a Pacific crossing in 2019, I began coding and developed a digital engineering logbook for personal use. I realised the potential of the collected data and started comparing maintenance schedules with the trends, which showed a misalignment. After moving to New Zealand in 2020, I decided to build a solution to improve efficiency in shipping and the wider maritime industry. I also feel a strong drive to reduce the sector’s environmental impact, especially in global shipping, which has been and will continue to be a vital part of global trade.

What programmes, learning or mentoring, or resources have been of assistance so far?

  • I’m currently pursuing an MBA at Auckland University of Technology, which has been instrumental in helping me navigate and grow my business.
  • For other entrepreneurs, I highly recommend the podcast How I Built This—it offers valuable insights through the experiences of successful founders, providing inspiration and practical lessons from their journeys.
