Can you tell us a bit about your business?

I have designed, developed and manufactured a tool which aids in kindling splitting and collection. It essentially wraps around the piece of wood, constricting the wood as it’s split to keep it on the block. This reduces the chance of injury, eliminates the need to pick kindling up off the ground and provides a simple method for carrying away the wood.

The problems this tool solves:

  1. The time it takes to cut and collect kindling
  2. Risk of injury cutting small pieces while balancing them on the block with the other hand
  3. Kindling flying away from the chopping block
  4. Effort to pick wood up from the ground when finished and wet kindling from rainfall/snow on the ground

What’s the backstory for your business idea?

The idea for the Kindling Collector was in my mind for many years without a durable solution presenting itself. In mid 2021, I noticed a long thick spring which had the properties I needed to solve the durability challenge for the Kindling Collector. Once this was tested on an early prototype version (and exceeded my expectations) I knew it was a brilliant business idea.

What programmes, learning or mentoring have been of assistance so far?

  • Website and landing page design using WordPress, Google Analytics, Facebook and social media marketing have all been learnt through online courses/research/books.
  • I have had guidance on patenting from Henry Hughes and developed a basic understanding of searching prior art.
  • Pro-Dev Wellington assisted me with CAD design, production as well as provided advice around packaging, and resources available to new businesses.
  • I’ve developed basic video editing and content creation through trial and error and am currently learning about KickStarter promotions.
